I live my life surrounded by family, house, friends, books, music,
and the natural world. For over 30 years, making art has been my way
of expressing the love I have for this life, to ask questions about
it, and to express my gratitude for it. I find myself asking B What
is going on here? What is worthy of our attention? How should we
live? What is good, true, and beautiful? I have no hope of finding
definitive answers to these questions, but searching for them through
my art gives me hope.
I construct my sculptures out of wood B locust wood for outdoor
sculptures and pine, poplar, or hemlock for the indoor ones. I like
the common, ordinariness of these woods and the fact that they come
from local sources. Constructing (adding one piece to another) seems
right as a working method because I see art as a constructive act.
Visitors to my Floyd County studio will see a variety of indoor
sculptures and they can hike the trails through the surrounding 9
acres of woods and fields to see examples of my outdoor sculptures.
